Sidney D. “Sid” Callihan, 87, a lifelong, well-known Chicora resident, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2025, at home in the company of his family.

Sidney was born at home in Chicora on Oct. 30, 1937. He was the son of the late Paul J. “Sam” and Gertrude “Tootie” Rose Waltman Callihan.

He was a devoted Christian and lifelong member of Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church in Chicora, where he was baptized, confirmed, served as an altar boy for many years and married. He also served on church council.

Sid was a 1957 graduate of Chicora High School and was employed at INDSPEC in Petrolia for more than 37 years. He retired as a maintenance supervisor and foreman in 1998. He was a well-known painting contractor in Chicora for more than 40 years, where he had many loyal and satisfied customers. Sid possessed an exceptional work ethic and was a well-respected mentor to many of his helpers. He enjoyed talking with others, especially about the history of Chicora. He raised beagles and was an avid rabbit hunter for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine M. Campbell Callihan. The couple was married by Father Laffey on May 14, 1960. Also surviving are two sons, Jay Daniel Callihan and his wife, Tonya, of Chicora, and Frank P. Callihan and his wife, Penny, of Dillsburg; two grandsons, Brett D. Callihan and his wife, Miranda, of Chicora, and Mark P. Callihan of Dillsburg; three great-grandchildren, Jepsen, Zayden and Kyla Callihan; his siblings, John Callihan and his wife, Donna, Joan Ball, and Michael P. Callihan and his wife, Donna, all of Chicora; his sisters-in-law, Lois Callihan of Butler, Brenda Callihan and Judy Callihan of Chicora, and LaVaun Carvarra of Palm Springs, Calif.; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Dillon Callihan; and his brothers, Edward, Paul, Bernard “Bean” and Richard “Dick” Callihan; as well as a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

CALLIHAN — Friends of Sidney D. “Sid” Callihan, who died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025, will be received from noon to 2 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at HILE FUNERAL HOME of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Road, Chicora.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday from Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church, Chicora, with the Rev. Matt McClain, pastor of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, officiating.

A private committal service and burial will be at Hemphill Cemetery, Chicora.
