High school roundup: Knoch girls basketball clinches WPIAL playoff spot; Butler boys hold on for win
Knoch’s girls basketball team secured a WPIAL playoff berth for the eighth straight season with a 43-35 victory over Valley on Tuesday.
Neah Ewing paced the Knights (9-9, 8-3) by scoring 20 points, including four 3-pointers.
Trinity Ingram netted 14 points for the Vikings.
Cranberry Area 56, Union/A-C Valley 22 — Maddy Dehart scored a game-high nine points as the Falcon Knights (4-11) fell.
After allowing just 12 points in the first half, Butler withstood a 24-point third period by Woodland Hills in a 61-53 road victory.
Stainton Forbes managed a double-double to lead the way, scoring 21 points and controlling 11 rebounds.
Tayt Lucas scored 16 and added four assists in the win. Andrew Gettinger had 13 points and nine boards for the Golden Tornado (12-6, 5-6).
Slippery Rock 65, Farrell 42 — A double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds from Josh Book helped the Rockets top the Steelers.
Max Kovacik added 15 points and eight boards, Anderson Franco nine points and five assists for Slippery Rock (11-5).
North Catholic 67, Burrell 39 — North made 13 treys, four apiece from Jason Fredericks and Jude Rottmann, as the Trojans crushed Burrell.
Fredericks scored 22 points in the win while Rottmann added 12 for North (13-5, 8-1).
Freeport 74, Valley 63 — Carson Kane erupted for 25 points to lead the Yellowjackets (5-12, 2-7). Bryson Paga added 17 points.
Montour 68, Mars 55 — Austin Campbell scored 20 points and Austen Wroblewski 14 in this loss for the Planets (11-8, 5-4)
Summit Academy 87, Avella 76 — Ky’Zir Rowan had 27 points, Robert Young 20 and Jamir Dunn 17 as the Knights (7-6, 4-3 section) won.
Colin Cummings had a 697 high series and rolled a 249 game, but Freeport’s boys team lost to Armstrong 7-0. On the girls’ side, Hannah Windows had a 619 high series and a 227 game as the Yellowjackets downed the River Hawks 7-0.
Luke Lamb (200-yard/500-yard freestyle) and Preston Heynes (100 free) won three individual events between them and keyed a rally in the 400 free relay that sealed an 82-79 win over Pine-Richland.
The Planets’ girls suffered a 92-80 loss to the Rams.
