Moniteau girls basketball rides stifling defense, hot start to victory over Forest Area

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau girls basketball got hot in the middle of the first quarter and did not look back during its 44-12 win over Forest Area at the Warriors’ home gym Tuesday night.

Five Moniteau players made at least one bucket over the first eight minutes with Sophia Fleeger’s six points leading the way. It became a theme throughout the night, as four players finished with between six and nine points. Charlotte Thompson, led with nine points, and Maddy Eury and Alyssa Thompson each had eight.

“We played pretty well,” Moniteau coach Dee Arblaster said. “I thought everybody played well tonight.”

An Emily Matz steal got the Warriors’ hot stretch going. Sayge Brunst followed the takeaway with a basket to put the Warriors (6-11, 4-3 KSAC) out in front 5-2 with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.

At the 4:20 mark, Brunst got a steal of her own and scored a layup to open up a five-point Moniteau advantage.

Tara Brown got Forest (2-11, 0-7) on the board with its only bucket of the first half; turnovers and missed shots were too much to overcome.

The highlight of Fleeger’s first quarter came with just over two minutes left when her and-1 put an exclamation point on Moniteau’s 17-point opening period.

The second quarter was a similar story. While Moniteau’s scoring was dialed back slightly, the Warriors’ held their opponent off the board entirely.

Maddy Eury made sure to keep all momentum on the side of the home team as she drilled a 3-pointer with just seconds remaining in the half to bring the Warriors’ lead to 28-2 at half.

Forest started well in the third quarter, opening the second half with four points courtesy of Peighton Trout. Jaydin Colvin also hit a 3-pointer.

Thompson drained two triples to answer the Fires.

“[Thompson]’s been hitting some big 3s all year for us,” Arblaster said. “She’s been a big surprise for us this year and she’s got a lot of confidence in that.”
