High school roundup: Butler indoor track relays sprint into program record books
Butler’s 4x200 meter boys relay shined Saturday at an indoor track and field meet at Akron University (Ohio).
The team of Grayden Brown, Chris Rubcic, Aaron Stebick and Kevin Shriver posted a 1:30.49 to finish second in the race. The time is the second fastest in program history behind the All-American team from 2022 that held the fifth fastest time in the country that year.
The 4x400 boys relay — Shriver, Brown, Stebick and Carter Ekas — also came in second in 3:29.74, which is the eighth fastest time in program history.
Both relays lost to the Butler Aviators (Ohio).
The girls continued a strong relay day for the Golden Tornado, with the 4x400 — Madi McGarrah, Adraya Baxter, Lyla Bowden and Jocie Slesinsk — winning in 4:09.02. It’s the sixth fastest time in Butler history.
The 4x800 — Bowden, Makayla McLister, Kyra Olivares and Macie McLister — finished second in 10:50.62, and the 4x200 relay — McGarrah, Slesinski, Aubrey Rock and Rylie Jack — came in fourth in 1:51.59.
Other top Butler performances Saturday included:
* Boys 3200: Logan Rogers finished third in 9:51.80
* Boys triple jump: Ellis Campbell finished third with 39-11, and Julian Soler finished seventh with 35-0
* Boys 1600: Ethan Thomas finished in 4:26.62, the fourth fastest time in Butler history
* Boys 800: Zach Slear finished fifth in 2:01.35
* Boys 400: Stebick finished sixth in 50.83, fourth fastest in Butler history
* Boys pole vault: Jason Wick finished sixth with a 13-1
* Boys 60-meter hurdles: Thaddeus Mago finished seventh in 9.04
* Girls 800: McGarrah finished second in 2:25.43
* Girls triple jump: Audrey Sansom finished second with 33-9, and Halle Swidzinski finished third with 33-6
* Girls high jump: Slesinski finished third with 5-0
* Girls long jump: Rock finished fifth with 15-4
* Girls 60 hurdles: Baxter finished sixth in 9.83
* Girls 3200: Makayla McLister finished sixth in 12:16.19, and Zari Golojuh finished seventh in 12:34.47
Slippery Rock competes at Spire Ohio meet — Dustin Joyce finished third in the boys triple jump with a 42-3.75, highlighting the Rockets’ day at the SPIRE Indoor Track & Field Facility in Geneva, Ohio. He also finished fifth in the long jump with a 20-4.5
Samantha Montgomery finished fourth in the girls long jump, leaping 33-0. And Tessa Szymanski set a new school record in the 1600 with a 5:46.72, finishing 32nd in the race.
Seneca Valley’s Aubrey Erdos vaulted 11 feet in the girls pole vault to finish third.
Hannah Hornick (170 pounds) finished fourth at the North Allegheny Girls Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, the top Butler County wrestler on the day.
Hornick lost to Norwin’s Octavia Walker by pin in 2:15 in the third-place bout. Teammate Maddee Fischer took home fifth at 130 after pinning Dallastown’s Kenna Hoffman in 3:52.
Seneca Valley finished 14th in the tournament with 76.5 points and Butler finished 28th with 16 points.
The Raiders’ other medalists included Everly Harrell (100 pounds) in sixth, Kaeleigh Tuell (155) in seventh, and Harlee Hornick (170) and Kenley Alexander (148) in eighth, each.
Olivia Hageman took home Butler’s lone medal, pinning Connellsville’s Ravyn Cameron-Botti in 4:38 to win the seventh-place bout at 190.
Sophia Fleeger scored a game-high 22 points to lead Moniteau to a 45-36 win Saturday over Clarion.
Fleeger grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Emily Matz recorded a double-double of her own with 12 points and 14 boards. Matz scored eight of those points in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors (7-13, 5-3 KSAC) have won four of their last six and are fourth in the conference.
