High school roundup: Butler girls clinch WPIAL playoff spot, Seneca Valley wins section title outright
Butler’s girls basketball team clinched a WPIAL Class 6A playoff berth with a 40-37 victory over host Pine-Richland on Monday.
Amelia McMichael (13 points), Avery Maier (10) and Sydney Patterson (9) led the way for the Golden Tornado (10-9, 5-4 Section 1-6A).
Cate Gentile scored 21 points for the Rams (7-12, 6-2).
Seneca Valley 65, Woodland Hills 29 — The Raiders will keep their first taste of a section championship in 48 years all to themselves, winning the 1-6A crown outright with this thumping of the Wolverines.
Natalie Hambly’s 19 points included four 3-pointers, Gracie Cato added 15 points and Reece McFadden 12 in the victory.
SV (14-5, 9-0) can finish the section slate undefeated with a win at home Thursday against Pine-Richland.
Mars 49, New Castle 30 — Alexis Cashdollar and Grace Zatezalo each scored nine points as the Planets (12-8, 6-5 WPIAL Section 3-5A), who have secured one of the four playoff spots in their section, led this one comfortably throughout.
Slippery Rock 65, Sharon 49 — The Rockets clinched at least a share of the region title with this win over the Tigers.
CJ Sabo continued her superb senior season with 21 points, 12 boards and four assists. Madison Romanovich contributed 20 points, six assists and seven steals in the win. Brielle Jordan added eight points and three assists, Gia Kovacik eight points and eight rebounds for Slippery Rock (14-5).
Keystone 52, Union/A-C Valley 17 — The Falcon Knights got eight points from Maddy Dehart and five from Lilly Hayden in this one.
Freeport 49, Highlands 29 — The Yellowjackets overcame a slow start to pick up a critical win to stay in the WPIAL Class 4A playoff race. The victory bumped Freeport to 6-14 (5-8 Section 1-4A) and put some distance between it and Highlands (5-14, 4-9), which is chasing Freeport for the fifth and final spot in the section.
Nia DiSanti scored a team-high 11 points, and Macy Stivenson scored 10. Lilly Holloway sank three 3-pointers for nine points, and Elana Jenkins added eight points.
Braden Beechem scored 10 points as Moniteau fell 43-31 at home Monday night to Johnsonburg.
Connor Ealy and Weston Cook each scored seven for the Warriors.
