North Catholic boys basketball beats Knoch to gain upper hand in WPIAL section title race

CRANBERRY TWP — Four weeks ago, North Catholic saw a WPIAL Section 1-4A victory slip from its grasp when Knoch outscored the Trojans by 10 points in the third quarter.

In Tuesday’s rematch, North tightened up on defense, including in the game’s final seconds in earning a 54-53 boys basketball victory.

Jackson Bauman had pulled the Knights to within one point with a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining. North then failed to inbound the ball in time, handing possession, and a potential dramatic finish, to Knoch.

The first attempt at getting the ball in was deflected out of bounds by the Trojans. With 1.8 seconds remaining, Derek Lang was the target inside, but the ball caromed to Zane Pacek, whose jumper was blocked as time expired.

“We were looking to set a screen and take advantage of our size to get a lob inside,” Knoch coach Alan Bauman said. “They made shots down the stretch, and we didn’t. That was the difference.”

Knoch junior Teegan Finucan scored nine points, putting him at exactly 1,000 for his career.

A Knoch win would have set the Knights (14-6, 9-2) up with a chance to clinch an outright section title with a victory Friday against Freeport. But now, it’s North (15-5, 10-1) with that opportunity with its game at Deer Lakes.

“I know a lot of those guys (for Knoch),” said North guard Jude Rottmann, who scored 13 points. “They’re a really good team, and I respect them. This wasn’t about revenge, it was about finding a way to beat a really good basketball team.”

The Trojans made six of their seven attempts from the field over the final eight minutes, with Jason Fredericks and Jude Rottmann combining for five of them.

Those makes helped to negate Jackson Bauman’s effort. He scored a team-high 16 points in the game, including eight of Knoch’s 10 in the final period.

The Knights led 43-39 entering the final quarter. Two baskets from Jason Fredericks knotted the score and Rottmann’s trey put the Trojans up for good, 46-43 with 5:32 left.

“Closing games out has been a struggle for us,” Alan Bauman said. “Making plays late, we need to figure it out.”

Fredericks scored 17 for the Trojans.
