High school roundup: North Catholic, Knoch boys basketball win to lock up WPIAL section spots
North Catholic drained 11 3-pointers, took the lead for good early in the first quarter and clinched the WPIAL Section 1-4A title outright with a 69-60 boys basketball win Friday at Deer Lakes.
Jason Fredericks scored 24 to pace the Trojans (16-5, 11-1). Jude Rottmann had 14, including four treys, and Eli Stofko added 10.
Collin Rodgers had 17 points to lead the Lancers (16-5, 9-3).
Knoch 76, Freeport 35 — This win, coupled with North Catholic’s defeat of Deer Lakes, clinches second place in the section standings for the Knights (15-6, 10-2).
Jackson Bauman scored 14 points in the win and is now just 15 shy of 1,000 for his career.
Brody Bauman chipped in with 12, Teegan Finucan had 11 and Derek Lang 10.
Michael Graczyk (12 points) and Danny King (10) scored in double figures for the Yellowjackets (6-15, 3-9).
Summit Academy 82, Cornell 67 — Robert Young finished with a game-high 31 points to power the Knights to a road win.
Ky’Zir Rowan added 25 points and Quaran Joiner scored 18. Summit Academy had already qualified for the WPIAL Class 1A playoffs.
Chartiers Valley 61, Mars 50 — Austin Campbell led the Planets with 21 points, and Will Wilson added 10.
Mars (12-10, 6-6) awaits the release of the WPIAL Class 5A playoff bracket Monday.
Grove City 52, Slippery Rock 50 — The Rockets (12-8) lost for the third time in four games despite a combined 31 points from Josh Book (19) and Max Kovacik (12).
Ben Fischer and Christian Kurz both netted 16 for Grove City (15-5).
Union 54, Karns City 46 — The Gremlins led by two points at the end of the third period, but were outscored 16-6 in the fourth.
Gage Jordan had 13 points, 10 boards and five blocks for the Golden Knights (9-12) while Jackson Renwick hit four treys.
Jacob Jones netted 13 points for KC (9-12) and Cole Johnston 11.
Karns City’s 56-39 win over Grove City featured a standout effort from Savanna Prescott.
The senior scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to spark the Gremlins (18-2).
Brooklynn Taylor scored 18 points in the victory. Izzy Gamble led Grove City with 23 points.
Moniteau 44, North Clarion 33 — Sophia Fleeger tallied 16 points and Charlotte Thompson 10 points and seven rebounds as Moniteau improved to 8-13 on the season.
Emily Matz added eight boards for the Warriors.
Chartiers Valley 46, Mars 42 — A slim lead for the Planets entering the final quarter disappeared as the Colts outscored Mars by six in the final eight minutes.
Vita Vargo scored 13 points and Alexis Cashdollar 10 for playoff-bound Mars (12-9, 6-6).
Butler’s regular season came to an end Wednesday, with the girls concluding a 10-0 season with a 5-2 win over New Castle and the boys closing out an 8-2 season with a 7-0 win over previously unbeaten New Castle.
The WPIBL team tournaments are next week in Mt. Lebanon, with the boys competing Wednesday and the girls Thursday. The individual championships will be held Feb. 19-20.
Makenzie Zimmerman led the girls with a 566 series, shooting 210, 186 and 170.
Greg Wilbert led the boys with a 719 series, rolling 232, 247 and 240.
