Custodian from Saxonburg charged with selling alcohol, THC vape to students

A Saxonburg man is facing criminal charges in Allegheny County alleging he sold alcoholic beverages and a THC vape pen to students at Pine-Richland High School while he was working as a custodian.

Northern Regional Police charged Keon E. Barrett, 23, with felony counts of delivery of a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility, and two misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors.

Barrett was arrested Feb. 6 after police were dispatched to the high school, where the principal and another police officer said students reported that Barrett was selling alcohol and THC vape pens to students after hours on school grounds, according to an affidavit.

One student told police that he arranged a deal in November between one of his friends and Barrett in which he gave Barrett $20 to buy two cases of Twisted Tea, and Barrett left the beverages next to his vehicle, according to the affidavit.

A second student told police that during a Feb. 4 varsity basketball game, around 8:52 p.m., he and Barrett went into a cafeteria restroom where he was offered and smoked from Barrett’s THC vape pen and then returned to the basketball game, according to the affidavit.

That student also reported that he exchanged messages with Barrett on Snapchat about buying a THC pen and Twisted Tea, and paid Barrett $10 on Feb. 5, according to the affidavit. The student said he went with Barrett to his vehicle and Barrett opened his trunk and retrieved the pen and alcohol, according to the affidavit.

Police said the second student turned over the messages, and security footage recorded part of the encounter.

Wexford District Judge Matthew Brungo arraigned Barrett and released him on nonmonetary bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 26.
