High school roundup: Butler rifle finishes 3rd at WPIAL team championships, makes states
Butler rifle advanced to the PIAA championship after finishing third Tuesday in the WPIAL Rifle Team Championships.
The Golden Tornado scored a 799-61x at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club, finishing behind champion Woodland Hills (800-53x) and Hempfield Area (799-63x). Mt. Lebanon clinched the fourth and final WPIAL spot in the state tournament.
Brooke Schramm scored a Butler-high 100.10, tying for the top mark in Tuesday’s championships with Woodland Hills’ Avery Thomas and Shamira Pennell.
Butler had seven shooters score at least a 100. Rachel Katsko and Andrew Wolfe scored 100.09, Alyssa Miller and Jackson Jungling scored 100.08, and Shayna Fleeger and Madison Krainbucher scored 100.05.
Josh Book scored 16 points and Max Kovacik added 15 in Slippery Rock’s 43-36 loss to Hickory.
The duo scored 24 of those points combined in the second half for the Rockets (12-9, 4-5 District 10, Region 4).
Karns City routed Union/A-C Valley 79-30 Tuesday night.
The Gremlins (19-2, 7-1), who will play Friday in the KSAC Tournament semifinals, had four players in double figures in this one: Brooklynn Taylor and Savanna Prescott each had 13, Hannah Summerville had 11 and Chloe Fritch scored 10.
Maddy Dehart led the Falcon Knights (4-17, 1-8) with 19 points.
