Neubert: Two different wintry takes on triathlons return to Butler County in February
Most of us have at least a vague knowledge of the sport of triathlon.
From the world-famous Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, to our local Mighty Moraine Multi-Sport Festival held annually in Moraine State Park, most triathlons feature swimming, cycling and running in that order. And for the most part, triathlons take place in the beautiful outdoors, which, I am sure you’ve noticed, is frosty in Western Pennsylvania this time of year.
But at 9 a.m. Sunday, Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA in Cranberry Township offers triathletes of all ages and abilities a cozy and warm take on the sport with its annual indoor triathlon. The event is held completely indoors with a pool swim, stationary bike and treadmill run.
Kathy Hensler, Healthy Living Director at the YMCA, said the event has been held at the Y for approximately nine years with a break for the COVID-19 pandemic. She expects 30-40 participants from ages 7 to 70-plus with a large contingent of area youth from Joella Baker’s Get Fit Families triathlon training program.
Hensler, a marathon runner currently training for Pittsburgh Half Marathon, said the YMCA Indoor Triathlon is a great introduction to the sport. The indoor distance and mileage are easier as participants complete set times for each segment rather than complete a set course.
Participants are seeded by age. Kids ages 7-10 complete 10 minutes of pool swimming, 15 minutes on a stationary bike and 10 minutes running on a treadmill. All older competitors swim 10 minutes, cycle 30 minutes and run 20 minutes.
Points are awarded for completed laps or miles. Top three overall and in age groups from 7-10 through 55-plus earn medals. And there are snacks of fruit, donuts, bagels and cookies for all.
Hensler welcomes first-timers to the event. She advised newbies eat a good dinner the evening before and a breakfast of protein and light carbohydrates. Wear your swimsuit to the starting area and pack a gym bag with clothes and shoes for the bike and running segments. Cycling shoes are helpful but not necessary.
Registration is available online at bcfymca.org/events/indoor-triathlon-1 until race day with a discounted price for YMCA members. There will be limited day of event registration, as well. If you have questions, you are welcome to contact Hensler at khensler@bcfymca.org or 724-452-9122.
Looking ahead, Butler County Family YMCA in Butler will hold its own Indoor Triathlon on April 5. It’s open to anyone ages 15 and up with a slightly different format.
Participants in the Butler Indoor Tri complete a quarter-mile swim, ride 7 miles on a stationary bike and run a 5K on a treadmill. Registration is open to all with a discount for members now through March 31 at bcfymca.org/events/indoor-triathlon-0. For more information, contact Jamie Knauff, Butler YMCA Aquatic and Programs Director, at jknauff@bcfymca.org or 724-287-4733.
If triathlon isn’t for you, the 49th Spring Thaw runs through North Park on Feb. 22. Choose from 5, 10, 15 or 20 miles in gentle counterclockwise 5-mile loops of North Park Lake. It’s a great training event for a spring marathon or just getting out for a long run with friends.
After the run, join those friends for a bowl of hot soup and other refreshments at North Park’s Rose Barn. All finishers earn a medal. There are competitive overall and age group awards for every distance. Five-milers receive a long-sleeved tee shirt while those in the longer distances receive a quarter-zip pullover.
This year’s Spring Thaw proceeds benefit 412 Food Rescue, a local charity that has delivered over 26 million pounds of surplus food to local people who need it.
