High school roundup: Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville claims District 10 section title

Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville beat Greenville’s Rudy Gentile by an 8-0 major decision to win the 160-pound title Saturday during the District 10 Class 2A Boys Wrestling Individual Section 2 Tournament at Meadville High School.

He headlined the Rockets’ start to the individual postseason. After a first-round bye, Turberville won his quarterfinal and semifinal matchups with technical falls.

Tyler Phipps (127 pounds) finished fourth after he was pinned in 1:17 by Saegertown’s Milan Harrison. Alex Cornelius (172) won seventh with a pin of Sharon’s Brandon Perks in 47 seconds, and Aden Shay (133) and Connor Metheny (145) finished eighth.

Indoor track and field

Butler closed out the regular season with several more podium finishes Saturday at the fifth TSTCA meet of the season at Edinboro University. The TSTCA Indoor Championships will be held next weekend at Edinboro.

Brendan Eicher took home gold for the Golden Tornado with a 3,000-meter run of 9:05.54.

Butler also impressed in the relays, as they have much of the season.

The girls distance medley relay team of Avery Sintz, Lyla Bowden, Macie McLister and Madi McGarrah came in second in 13:22.17, posting the fourth best time in program history. The boys (Zach Slear, Carter Ekas, Logan Rogers and Ethan Thomas) tied them with a second-place finish and fourth all-time mark with a 10:39.03.

The boys 4x400 relay (Regan Peth, Isaac Miller, Shae Sintz and Silvio Andreassi) and 4x200 relay (Preston Simko, Peth, Miller and Thaddeus Mago) came in second and third, respectively, with times of 3:45.77 and 1:37.00. The girls’ 4x800 (Kyra Olivares, Malaya Azarcon, Lily Ekas and Addison Eicher) finished fourth.

Three girls reached the podium in multiple events, as well. Zari Golojuh finished fourth in the mile (5:50.62) and 3,000 (11:24.54); Audrey Sansom came in third in the triple jump (33-0) and eighth in the long jump; and Gracyn Vardy finished fourth in the high jump (4-11) and sixth in the triple (31-11.25).

For the boys, Eli Campbell leaped to third in the triple jump in 38-8 and sixth in the long jump (18-9). Peth added to his relay finishes with sixth in the 400 in 52.20, Mago came in sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.87, fourth in program history) and Sintz finished eighth in the 800 (2:07.04).

Maximus Walker rounded out the boys’ medal winners with seventh in the high jump (5-7).

Several other Butler athletes competed in a Youngstown State meet, where Slippery Rock also was, as well. Top Butler finishers included:

* Chris Rubcic: second in boys 60 (7.12, second in program history)

* Aaron Stebick: seventh in boys 200 (22.91, fifth all-time)

* Jocie Slesinski: sixth in girls 400 (58.89, third all-time), fifth in high jump (5-0)

* Aubrey Rock: seventh in girls pole vault (10-0), eighth in long jump (15-8.25)

* Adraya Baxter: eighth in girls 60 hurdles (9.56, third all-time)

Top Slippery Rock finishers included:

* Dustin Joyce: third in boys triple jump (42-6.5) and seventh in long jump (19-10.75)

* Samantha Montgomer: fifth in girls long jump (16-8.75) and sixth in triple jump (34-8) to break school record

* Justin Tustin: eighth in boys 110 hurdles (8.88)

* Danny Dinh: eighth in boys pole vault (11-0)

* Tessa Szymanski broke school indoor 1600 record in 5:40.20, and the girls 4x400 broke the school record with a 4:34.79

Girls basketball

Despite 16 points from Savanna Prescott, Karns City fell 54-41 to Redbank Valley in the KSAC Tournament championship game Saturday night at Clarion University.

Prescott scored 10 of those points in the second half. Brooklynn Taylor chipped in 10 points and Naomi Venesky eight.

Swimming

Marin Raible finished second with a score of 445 and Mya Lee took third with a 429.50 to lead Mars girls diving to a first-place finish Friday at the MAC Championships at Moon High School.

The swim team took third with 200 points at Saturday’s MAC Championships. Luke Lamb broke the meet and Moon pool records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100 free and 100 backstroke. No times or finishes were provided.
