PennDOT issues speed limit restrictions due to weather
PennDOT is advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and has issued speed and vehicle restrictions that will be in place throughout the storm.
The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph for commercial vehicles, which are restricted to the right lane on Interstate 79 between Exit 147B and Exit 54; Route 22 between the Route 11 north exit in Indiana County and the Interstate 99 South exit in Bedford County; and Interstate 80 between the Ohio state line and Exit 133.
I-80 has a Tier 1 restriction from the I-79 interchange to Exit 173. A Tier 1 restrictions prohibits tractors without trailers; tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers; tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers; enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks; passenger vehicles towing trailers; recreational vehicles/motor homes; school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches; and motorcycles.
PennDOT said crews have been treating road ahead of the storm to help prevent ice from forming a bond with the pavement, but salt does not resolve all risks and drivers may encounter icy spots on the road. With freezing temperatures, roads that look wet may actually be icy, and extra caution is needed when approaching bridges and highway ramps where ice can form.
Restrictions are communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps.
