Hazmat team called to scene of death in Slippery Rock

Police, fire units and a hazmat team were called to a home in the 200 block of Elm Street in Slippery Rock Borough on Sunday, Feb. 16, for a report of a deceased man. The man’s cause of death is unknown.

“We are still waiting for an autopsy, so no official cause yet,” said Trooper Bertha Cazy, public information officer for State Police Troop D.

According to scanner reports, photos and videos, state police and the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Team responded to the scene, blocking off a section of Elm Street near Slippery Rock University.

Butler County Hazmat Team was called to the scene around 4 p.m. to “help identify unknown substances,” according to Cazy.

While rumors flew on social media that the area contained a “meth lab” and dangerous chemicals, state police have denied those rumors.

“The substances were identified and are not related to a meth lab,” Cazy said. “No evidence of a meth lab was found. There was no ‘raid’ at that location.”

A representative from the state police told the Butler Eagle there would be a news release on the situation forthcoming.
