Butler grad David Bocci won gold in the men’s 200-meter butterfly Wednesday to close out a four-peat in the PSAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Bocci, a Clarion University senior, dominated as the clear favorite with a time of 1:47.69.

It’s been a good week at PSACs for Bocci. On Monday he broke a 16-year-old school record in the 1,000 freestyle with a 9:30.43 to finish third, then snagged silvers in the 100 fly and 400 medley relay.

On the final day of the conference championships Thursday, Bocci added to his medal haul with a silver in the 200 backstroke (1:49.64).

Formica breaks IUP mile record

A former Knoch runner, IUP junior Mike Formica, set a school record in the 1-mile run with a 4:09.20 at Feb. 16’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University.

Formica is the top-ranked runner in the event in the PSAC.

SRU men near playoff berth

Slippery Rock men’s basketball beat Clarion 83-72 Wednesday, senior night, to start the final week of the regular season.

The Rock (13-13, 9-9 PSAC West) can clinch a conference tournament berth with one win in their final two games against IUP or Edinboro. SRU has made PSACs 13 of the last 15 seasons.

Day Waters led The Rock with 23 points, his fourth game with 20-plus. Jomo Goings recorded a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

SRU women eliminated

Slippery Rock’s women’s team, meanwhile, was eliminated from the PSAC Tournament after Wednesday’s 76-58 loss to Clarion.

SRU (7-17, 4-14) got a team-high 12 points from Mairan Haggerty.
