High school roundup: Mars girls, North Catholic boys basketball teams reach semis
Behind a 20-point effort from Cecilia Christy and another 17 from Alexis Cashdollar, Mars’ girls basketball team downed No. 12 Bethel Park 55-42 on Wednesday night. Carmella McDole added 10 points in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal playoff win.
The Planets (15-9), seeded 13th, move on to Saturday’s semifinal round to play No. 1 South Fayette (23-1). The Lions haven’t lost a game since Dec. 28, winning 15 in a row since then.
Jude Rottmann posted 20 points and Jason Fredericks 13 as No. 2 North Catholic dispatched No. 7 Deer Lakes 65-51 on Wednesday night. Including that WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal triumph over the Lancers (17-6), the Trojans (17-5) have won nine in a row.
North Catholic takes on No. 3 Beaver in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Serra Catholic 80, Summit Academy 61 — The Knights’ season came to a close with this WPIAL Class 1A quarterfinal defeat. Summit Academy finishes with a 9-8 record.
