AC Valley releases details of severance agreement with teacher of 20-plus years

Amid swirling rumors on social media, a teacher who worked for the Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District for more than 20 years agreed last month to sever ties with the district, according to a severance agreement acquired by the Butler Eagle on Friday, Feb. 21.

The school district had approved the agreement and general release with Amber Alworth at its school board meeting Feb. 17. The agreement states the district will pay Alworth $17,500 for unused sick leave in exchange for her termination of employment with the district.

Alworth, who had been employed by AC Valley since September 2004, and others employed by the district were the subject of social media rumors alleging misconduct.

According to the agreement, Alworth denies any wrongdoing. She had been on paid administrative leave from May 20, 2024 until July 12, when her leave became unpaid.

Previous Butler Eagle reporting from Feb. 4, confirmed a police investigation related to the district had been opened and closed without any charges. The investigation did not name any specific individuals.

In exchange for Alworth signing the agreement, the district will pay Alworth for her unused sick leave, which amounts to $17,500. The payment will be made within 20 days of the board’s approval.

As part of the agreement, Alworth gives up any right to pursue legal action against the school district. Meanwhile, the district denies any act of unlawful discrimination, a statement Alworth agrees to in the document.

“The purpose of this agreement is to accomplish Alworth’s orderly and amicable separation of employment,” the agreement states.

According to the severance agreement, Alworth will be allowed to attend district events like any other member of the public, but she will not be allowed to apply for reemployment with the school district.

Alworth was given 21 days to review the agreement before signing it. She signed it Jan. 20.

The agreement was signed by Alworth and Kelly Terwilliger, president of the AC Valley school board, as well as Sarah Patton, secretary of the board, on Feb. 17.

When the school board approved the severance agreement, superintendent David McDeavitt told the board that student safety was the top priority and the administration had taken all required actions.

“I realize there have been some comments on social media in which rumors are recycled and embellished, and lots of innuendo has been freely spread,” McDeavitt said Feb. 17. “I represent to you that my administration has taken all the steps regarding the situation involving this person that are required and advisable.

“I encourage the board to ratify this agreement to put closure to this situation and to allow the district to focus on the actual challenges and opportunities at hand.”

McDeavitt declined further comment on Friday.

The Butler Eagle was unable to reach Alworth for comment.
