High school roundup: Mars boys move to WPIAL semis

Drew Navetta sank five 3-pointers and led Mars with 19 points, Austen Wroblewski added 17 and the 10th-seeded Planets downed No. 15 Penn-Trafford 64-59.

Mars is set to face No. 6 Peters Township in Tuesday’s WPIAL Class 5A semifinals.

Hickory 53, Slippery Rock 45 — Josh Book posted 13 points, the Rockets’ only double-digit output, in the District 10 Class 4A quarterfinal loss.

Boys wrestling

Knoch’s Owen Layhew (145 pounds) reached the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Wrestling Individual Championships Friday at Chartiers Valley High School. Layhew defeated Ligonier Valley’s Aidan Mulheren by major decision in the first round before downing Burrell’s Cadyn Crawford by pinfall (2:55) in the quarterfinals.

Layhew will face off with Valley’s Antonio Perkins on Saturday for the right to move on to the finals. His Knights teammate, Wyatt Foster (215) will wrestle in the consolation bracket’s second round against Quaker Valley’s Brennan Breisinger.

North Catholic’s Michael Pierro (107) and Victor Wagner (114) both had first-round pinfall victories, while Angelo Amelio (139) won by decision. They’ll each try to stay alive in the consolation bracket’s second round Saturday.

District 10 Tournament — Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville (160) got past Seneca’s Donovan Huzinec by tech fall (18-3, 4:30) in the quarterfinals of the District 10 Class 2A Boys Wrestling Individual Championships. Turberville will square with General McLane’s Hudson Spires in Saturday’s semifinals.

The Rockets’ Tyler Phipps (127) will lock horns with Warren’s Adika Fiscus in the consolation bracket.
