WPIAL wrestling championships: Kase Chopp faces important hurdle, rematch as Butler advances 4

CANONSBURG — Kase Chopp has been waiting for this moment.

The Butler 145-pound senior has a chance to wrestle one, if not two, of the wrestlers who beat him earlier this year when the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Wrestling Individual Championships resume Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School.

Chopp, who went 2-0 Friday in Day 1, will face No. 2 Ethan Higgins (Bethel Park) in the semifinals. Higgins handed Chopp, the No. 3 seed entering the tournament and now 39-6 on the year, one of his more disappointing losses at the beginning of the season.

And if the senior can get revenge, next could be undefeated Baldwin senior and top seed Ramil Islamov in the title bout.

“I like that matchup, that’s a winnable match for us, but if the kid beats him, he beats him,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said. “But I’d like to see him, obviously, wrestle his best match.”

Chopp said the key will be maintaining his pace because “I know I can get takedowns when I need them.”

That was on display during a quarterfinal win over Trinity sophomore Devin Junko. Chopp got his legs caught while leading just 3-1 in the first period and slowed things down to get a better feel for his opponent.

Once Chopp realized he had the upper hand midway through the second period, he stacked up multiple takedowns to win 14-5. It was a closer-than-expected score, “but I kind of need that because it’s not going to be easy tomorrow,” he said.

Chopp lost for just the second time this season Dec. 7 to Higgins in the Chartiers-Houston Invitational by a 6-4 decision. He lost to Islamov 10-1 three weeks later in the Southmoreland Holiday Classic.

Stoner said Chopp has been working on his mentality since that Higgins loss.

“I’m just gonna calm down, I’m not gonna think about it too much,” Chopp said about his overnight preparation. “It’s never good to overthink your opponent and what they do.”

It was a mixed bag for the rest of Butler on the first day of the WPIAL championships.

Junior Santino Sloboda (127 pounds) is well on his way to repeating as district champion after two first-period, technical-fall victories Friday. He’ll face Indiana’s Carter Putt in Saturday’s semifinals in a rematch of last week’s sectional championship match Sloboda won by technical fall. The other half of the bracket pits Franklin Regional’s Mikey Ruane against Trinity’s Dom Canali.

Sophomore 107-pounder Nick Savannah survived the first round of consolations with a 7-0 win over Norwin’s Luca Butera to set up a second-round consy meeting with Shaler’s Anthony Jones, a tough matchup, Stoner said.

Senior Gavin Rush, after a series of back points, was eventually able to pin Fox Chapel’s Andrew Kratsa in the third period of the 152-pound consolation first round to set up a bout against Belle Vernon’s Kole Doppelheuer.

“He’s unorthodox,” Stoner said of Rush. “I’d like him to be a little bit more refined.”

But the Golden Tornado also lost two of their six remaining wrestlers. Sully Stutz went 0-2 at 121, and junior Sutton Stoner (160) and freshman Mason Swidzinski (133) were knocked out in pigtails

Day 2 of the WPIAL championships begins at 10 a.m.

Seneca Valley’s Smith stuns in consy

Sophomore Riley Smith went 0-2 in his first district championship appearance a year ago. He wanted to improve on that mark this weekend.

Mission accomplished.

Smith, knocked down to the 107-pound blood rounds after a first-round loss, trailed 3-1 late in his match against Belle Vernon’s Gracin Guglielmo when he scored back points to steal a 4-3 win as his coaches celebrated.

“I got high, which is a bad position, but I threw legs in,” Smith said. “With those I was able to get a power-half and got some back points to get my three and win. When we got that stalemate (shortly after), I just kept that tight waist ... so he couldn’t do much.”

He faces Moon’s Bryce Thomas needing to win to stay in the hunt for a PIAA Southwest Regional Tournament berth. The top seven in each weight class from the WPIAL make regionals.

The Raiders got Zach Hill into the second-round consys after his 7-1 quarterfinal loss to a tough TJ Allison (Trinity) at 139. Freshman Bryce Berekstazi (114) was eliminated after going 0-2.

Mars’ Hein still alive

Mars’ Liam Hein is still in position to make the regional tournament despite a quarterfinal loss to Higgins at 145. He gets a rematch in the second-round consys against Armstrong’s Max Formaini, who beat Hein 10-6 in last week’s sectional semifinals.

Freshman Sam Passarelli (121) was eliminated after going 0-2, and Joseph Zottola (172) was knocked out in pigtails.
