Butler city fire station garage doors to be replaced using grant
Butler City Council members accepted a proposal on Tuesday, Feb. 25, to use grant money to replace garage doors for the fire station.
The proposal from Overhead Door Company of Greater Pittsburgh was received at the amount of $56,431 and includes the total replacement of four doors.
The project is fully funded using $78,000 received by the city under the 2023 Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner Municipal Fire Department Capital Grant.
The proposal was accepted unanimously by the council.
According to the motion, the replacement includes the doors themselves, alongside associated operators, track, controls, wiring, hardware and safety sensors. Options are available for an antenna and 100,000 cycle torsion springs.
“It will be done probably by the beginning of summer,” Fire Chief Christopher Switala said on a possible timeline for the project.
The need for new garage doors was recognized in September 2024, when the city council voted to advertise for bids.
“Within the last couple years, there has been several springs that have broken that we’ve had to replace,” Switala said in September on the doors’ condition. “There have been wiring issues and so this will be to redo all of our controls and everything.”
While the garage doors have been replaced at the station before, the current doors are over 20 years old.
City council also unanimously accepted a Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services grant from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner. The grant totals $15,246.13 and is typically received annually.
“This year, it’s going to be used for purchasing some new attack hose particularly for use on high rise buildings,” Switala said.
