WPIAL Class 2A swimming championiships: Freeport’s Kira Schrecongost wins 100 butterfly

PITTSBURGH — Sheryl Schrecongost said she watched the girls 100-yard butterfly Thursday after “taking a deep breath and hoping for the best.”

This wasn’t just any meet, it was the WPIAL Class 2A championships and Schrecongost, Freeport’s coach, focused on two swimmers in the event.

In lane 5 was her daughter, Kira, a senior who was looking to defend her district title in the event. Right next to her, in lane 6, was younger sister, sophomore Kasey.

Kira won the event with a time of 54.85 and Kasey medaled with a 5th-place effort of 58.36.

It was the third title in the event in four years for Kira, who broke her own school record.

“I finally got 54,” she exclaimed. “It’s been my goal for three years and I was getting closer and closer to it. I set big goals for myself in this event and I’m overcome with emotion right now.”

Sheryl saw a good sign from Kira’s swim.

“It was the first time I saw her swim that race relaxed,” she said. “I think things have only just begun for her.”

Kasey Schrecongost competed here last year, though not against her sister. The former medaled in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke in 2024.

“I wanted to take a different journey and decided to swim the fly this year,” Kasey said before swimming the butterfly Thursday. “I knew Kira would be swimming it, too. I’m excited to be competing against her, but once that race starts, I’m swimming for me.”

Just three years ago, Kira was the underclassman looking up to sister Lexi Schrecongost, a 2022 Freeport graduate who won district gold in the breaststroke.

Both have inspired Kasey.

“My sisters are my best friends,” she said. “They’re both very talented and make me want to succeed even more. Competing in the same sport as them is a great opportunity for me.”

Sheryl Schrecongost said while her daughters each have a distinct personality, they have two traits in common.

“They all work very hard,” she said. “I never had to push them to go to practice and each of them are very humble.”

Kira, who is headed to Duquesne University, believes success will follow Kasey in the pool.

“She has what it takes to go far in this sport,” she said.

The Schrecongost duo helped Freeport place second in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay. Only a Mount Pleasant team anchored by All-American and North Carolina State commit Lily King kept the Yellowjackets from grabbing gold. Still the foursome, which included Rylee Freshcorn and Mary Anne Altman, broke the school record with a time of 1:46.82.

“I wasn’t shocked, but was a little surprised with our time,” Sheryl Schrecongost said. “The girls wanted it and they fought for it.”

Knoch’s Adrian Lavorini was concerned solely with time in his 200 IM race. That’s why a 3rd-place finish, achieved with a school-record time of 1:55.84, suits him just fine.

“It should be good enough (to get to) states,” he said. “I swam two minutes here a couple of years ago and made the state meet with that.

“I’m happy with it, but need to work on my backstroke. It’s always been my worst stroke.”

Only the champion in each event earns an automatic berth to the state meet. Other hopefuls will have to wait to see where their times stack up against other non-district winning times from across the state.

The WPIAL Swimming Championships conclude Friday.

Following are the Knoch and Freeport swimmers who earned a medal by placing in the top eight Thursday at the WPIAL Class 2A Championships, held at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool.
