Slippery Rock girls basketball loses District 10 third-place game on Franklin’s buzzer-beater
Slippery Rock girls basketball already secured a berth in the PIAA Tournament.
But Saturday’s District 10 Class 4A third-place game loss to Franklin was no less tough.
Sydney Stevens hit a turnaround hook shot at the buzzer to lift Franklin to a 44-42 win over the Rockets. Stevens grabbed a rebound at the right elbow, spun away from a defender and blindly heaved the ball, which banked off the glass and in.
The Rockets stormed out to a 36-18 halftime lead but went cold in the second half, scoring just six points. Madison Romanovich led SRHS with 18 points, 14 of them before halftime, and CJ Sabo scored all 14 of her points in the opening half.
Romanovich added seven rebounds and four assists, Sabo added four boards and Gia Kovacik finished with six points and eight rebounds.
Slippery Rock is the district’s fourth seed heading into the state tournament, which begins Saturday. The Rockets will visit WPIAL champion Oakland Catholic in the first round at 1 p.m.
