Prison sentence ordered in 2023 Rotary Park stabbing

A 19-year-old Butler man who was charged with stabbing two people near Rotary Park in Butler in September 2023 was sentenced to prison Wednesday in Butler County Court.

Dartavion A. Johnson was sentenced to serve 24 to 60 months in county prison after pleading guilty to a felony count of aggravated assault, and concurrently serve eight to 24 months in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated harassment by a prisoner.

He was sentenced remotely from the county prison, where he has been held in lieu of $100,000 bail since his September 2023 arrest. He was given credit for having served 530 days.

Butler police filed charges against Johnson following a Sept. 22 incident near the park where two men ages 25 and 32 were found with stab wounds.

The men were taken by ambulance to a medical helicopter, which flew them to separate hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

At a preliminary hearing in October 2023, police said they obtained footage of Johnson stabbing one of the men from a surveillance camera and a witness provided footage of Johnson stabbing the second man.

Johnson was taken into custody after he was located in a nearby yard, holding a knife and a metal fence pole.

According to a complaint filed in the case, Johnson told police he had been involved in a fight the previous night with an unknown man in Rotary Park. He fought the man again outside the Save A Lot grocery store in Pullman Square sometime before the incident in the park.

Johnson told police he spotted a group of the stranger’s friends in Rotary Park and did not engage with them at first. Then, one of the group approached him and said he was going to fight him. Police said Johnson recounted two people trying to take the metal pole before he stabbed them.

He was initially charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

While Johnson was in the prison on Sept. 27, 2024, county detectives charged him with aggravated harassment by a prisoner and two counts of terroristic threats for threatening to harm a corrections officer multiple times and spitting on officers.
