Adams Twp., Weaver Homes need to figure out roads issue
Adams Township supervisors and representatives from Weaver Homes need to get on the same page when it comes to keeping the streets of the Camp Trees and Hickory Glen neighborhoods clear of snow and ice.
It’s March, so spring is around the corner, but let’s be honest — this is Western Pennsylvania. We could still have a lot of snowy days ahead of us.
Adams Township sent letters to residents of both Weaver Homes neighborhoods late last month to let them know the township could soon stop maintaining the roads during bad weather. The municipality claims the developer has failed to pay for winter maintenance as it agreed to do — Weaver Homes hasn’t paid for work performed in 2023 or 2024, according to the township.
Since residents spoke out at a supervisors meeting last month, Chad Weaver, president of Weaver Homes, justified his company’s decision to stop paying for winter maintenance. He said it’s because the township continues to demand more of the developer to bring the neighborhood roads up to township standards, dragging out the process.
The township says it can’t take over the roads fully until they meet its standards, but Weaver said there is no reason the roads can’t be accepted as they are now. Weaver asked for a meeting to hash it out and supervisors replied that they’d meet once the past-due bills are paid.
At last week’s meeting, which Weaver did not attend, the supervisors tabled a motion to stop winter maintenance.
Residents spoke out against both parties this week, saying their opinions of the township and the developer have been negatively impacted and the two groups should figure this out together.
“It is unbelievable that we need to be here fighting for our roads to be maintained because our local government and a business refuses to sort out this issue amongst themselves and through appropriate legal avenues,” township resident Alison Cannon said.
She’s right. This isn’t a small matter and it should be resolved professionally and quickly — without spreading concern and confusion among the residents who have chosen to build their lives here.
