Butler Little Theatre play focuses on mothers’ trials and tribulations
Three first-time mothers meet and pontificate over their differing experiences in an upcoming play at Butler Little Theatre.
“Cry It Out” is a 2017 play by Molly Smith Metzler about two moms, Jessie and Lina, who are put in an awkward situation when a new father, Mitchell, asks them to accommodate his wife, Adrienne, in their daily routine. The play opens at Butler Little Theatre on Friday, March 14, and has shows through Saturday, March 22.
Katie Moore, director of “Cry It Out,” said the show is funny, but poignant, and may make viewers think of their experiences as mothers or with other mothers.
“If you’re female, you can kind of understand at least one of these women who speak to you personally, whether you have had the experience of being a mom or thought about being a mom,” Moore said. “For the men in the audience, perhaps just kind of think about maybe ways they never thought of their mom’s life and what it was like.”
Rehearsals began for the production in January, and Moore said the cast has been “fantastic” in bringing the play together. Casey Hoolahan plays Jessie, Sarah Altomari plays Lina, Kyrie Lokhaiser plays Adrienne and Steve Kalina plays Mitchell.
Moore said the play’s story covers everyday life, but is able to extrapolate on themes like motherhood and children versus career friction by mirroring real life situations.
“The role of wanting to go to work or not wanting to go to work and how that plays into it,” Moore said, “their personal lives, they come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and juxtaposition of all these three, what they don’t have in common and what they do have in common.”
Show times are 8 p.m. March 14, 15, 21 and 22; 7:30 p.m. March 18, 19 and 20; and 2:30 p.m. March 16.
The show runs about 90 minutes, and there is an intermission. The show contains adult language and situations.
