Oakland Township man sentenced for theft
An Oakland Township man was handed a prison sentence Wednesday in Common Pleas Court for having identification, credit and debit cards that didn’t belong to him
Brandon A. Williams, 29, was sentenced to serve 3 to 23 months and 15 days in Butler County Prison followed by 12 months of probation after pleading guilty to receiving stolen property, an additional 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to evading arrest and to pay $685 in restitution. He was sentenced remotely from the prison.
State police filed numerous charges against Williams after tracking a cellphone that was reported stolen to his home and finding the cards on Oct. 2.
An East Butler man reported his cellphone was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at his home on Oct. 2 and he used the phone’s GPS to find out the phone’ last known location, which was Williams’ home, according to an affidavit.
Williams wasn’t home when police arrived, but a relative removed cards from a pair of jeans that Williams might have worn. The cards included three state identification cards belonging to other people, five debit cards, two credit cards, a health benefits card and other identification cards, police said.
A trooper then noticed a cellphone that matched the description of the phone that was reported stolen, police said.
After obtaining a search warrant, police said they found a rolled up dollar bill that was suspected to have been used for ingesting illegal drugs.
Williams was initially charged with 16 counts of receiving stolen property, two counts of evading arrest on foot, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct. His $50,000 bail had been reduced to $25,000, but he remains in custody. He was given credit for having served 154 days.
