1 dead following Monday crash on Route 38
CONCORD TWP — The Butler County Coroner’s Office confirmed one death after a head-on collision along Route 38 on Monday, March 10.
Neither the identity of the person killed or the condition of anyone else involved in the crash was available Monday night.
The crash was reported around 4 p.m., with Chicora, Karns City and North Washington fire departments, and emergency medical personnel called to respond. It occurred just north of the intersection with Rider Road.
The road was closed to traffic for hours while crews responded to the scene. It reopened at 7:30 p.m.
As citizens and fire police stepped in to redirect traffic down Rider Road, traffic inched up a hill along the route. Vehicles either used the road to detour or turned around at the intersection. Some vehicles pulled to the side of the road to wait for the road to clear, but eventually gave up.
Past the intersection, state police established a perimeter line with police tape.
Two medical helicopters circled above the scene, looking for a place to land. Reports from emergency dispatch later indicated two patients were flown by helicopter for medical assistance.
Residents along Route 38 stood along the road and said they heard a crunching noise outside of their homes, but none had witnessed the crash.
Shortly before 5 p.m., crews began to return to service as police began to investigate the crash. A forensics van was called to the scene.
