Mae Jean Johns
Mae Jean Oesterling Johns, 99, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, at Beacon Place in Greensboro, N.C.
Jean was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Butler, and was raised in Summit Township by Sarah and Albert Oesterling. After graduation from Butler High School, she attended business school. Jean then went to work for the government decoding messages in support of Allied troops in World War II.
After dedicating her time to raising her children, she returned to the workplace in retail at Miller’s Shoes in Butler. Her hobbies included fishing, shopping, playing cards and enjoying an occasional banana split.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, William Grant Johns.
She is survived by son, Gary Johns (Monika) of Vancouver, British Columbia; son, Ronald Johns (Vicki) of Columbia City, Ind.; and daughter; Laurie Morris (Jim) of Greensboro, N.C. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jaime Johns, Tammy Johns, James Morris Jr. (Mary) and William Morris (Madeleine); great-granddaughters, Kate and Liza Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
JOHNS — A graveside service for Mae Jean Oesterling Johns, who died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, will be held on a future date in Butler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
