Miller Minutes: ‘For the good of the arts’
I’m here, I’m there, I’m everywhere.
A couple of weeks ago I was in Butler Little Theatre working outside of my comfort zone, using an air pressure nail gun to help lay out the set for “Cry It Out.”
No, I have never picked up a nail gun before, but I did it for the same reason I participate in any theater activity: because I was taught that no job is too small or unimportant.
In the midst of the painting and styrofoam-cutting frenzy, someone ordered pizza. The delivery man who came to the door surprised us all by handing us the goods and saying, “So, how does one get involved in the theater?”
When I tell you my heart leaped out of my chest, I’m not exaggerating.
Once I picked it up off the floor, I was struck by how much courage it must have taken to approach people he doesn’t know and ask how he can get involved. I realized both of us were working outside of our comfort zone that day for the good of the arts.
I hope he comes back. As I tell you all so often, the community arts need you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
