High school sports roundup: Butler baseball beats Baldwin; Karns City track sweeps Moniteau
Nolan Stefaniak struck out eight in five innings of work to earn the win in Butler’s 7-3 baseball victory over Baldwin on Tuesday.
Collecting two hits and a run batted in apiece for the Golden Tornado (3-0) were Boden Lenyk and Owen Boring.
Slippery Rock 1, Sharpsville 0 — Senior Austan Runtas went five innings, struck out 11 and allowed zero runs for the Rockets in this season-opening victory.
Isaac McCandless got the save, striking out four. He also recorded the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Casey Darr.
Mount Pleasant 14, Freeport 4 — No other details were provided for the Yellowjackets’ loss. Freeport is now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in section play.
Wilmington popped Slippery Rock 12-2. Grace Wetzel went 1-for-3 with a run and RBI for the Rockets, and Savannah Smith was also 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Karns City’s boys and girls swept Moniteau in the first dual-meet of the season; the boys won 102-48 and the girls won 101.5-48.5.
Owen Kaufman won the boys triple jump in 37-11, the 400-meter in 54.6 and was on the 4x400 relay that won in 5:21.10. Alex Wilson won the pole vault in 13-0 and the long jump in 19-6.5. Kolby Blair won the shot put in 43-7 and the discus in 138-11.5. And Noah Weiland won the 3200 in 10:58.7 and the 1600 in 4:58.7, then helped the 4x800 to a win in 9:25.70.
Moniteau’s Isaiah Thompson won the 100 in 11.5 and the 200 in 24.1.
On the girls’ side, the Gremlins’ Layla Colsey won the 200 and long jump and helped the 4x1 and 4x4 to wins. Brooke Rumbaugh contributed to three wins: the 4x8, 4x4 and 800.
Moniteau’s Brinn Kirschner, a freshman, won the 1600 and was second in the 400 and 3200.
Mars girls 96, Highlands 40; Mars boys 119, Highlands 22 — The Planets earned an early season sweep. No other details were provided.
Macey Edwards scored four goals for Freeport, but Aquinas Academy defeated the Yellowjackets 9-8. Ava Dreher added two goals in the loss.
