Library exhibit features postcard collection
“Reflections of Who We Are,” a display from the postcard collection of Laurel Patterson, will be on exhibit in April and May at the Butler Area Public Library.
Postcards on display are a sample from Patterson’s collection of nearly 1,600 postcards from across the U.S. and around the world, with some postcards dating back to 1907.
Patterson created the collection from personal correspondence, gifted collections from others, flea markets and antique shops.
“For centuries, we’ve made postcards from sketches and photos of what’s important to us,” Patterson said. “We mail them to acquaintances and loved ones, often with a message about our experience. Who we are is revealed in our arts and our history, in what we teach and what we remember. Some things are important for generations.”
The exhibit will feature picture postcards of art, music, books, museums, libraries and universities, along with quotes and questions pondering the concept of who we are, historically and currently.
Patterson, of Butler, is a retiree who spends time writing and speaking on various topics, including ecopsychology and well-being.
This exhibit will be on display in the second-floor gallery at the Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St. in Butler until the end of May. For information, call 724-287-1715.
