Sewing along

Despite a decline in popularity, sewing was still alive and well in Butler County in March 2006, when students in different school districts and members of Butler County 4-H clubs took sewing lessons from seamstresses.

Joann Fabric in Cranberry Township had a variety of sewing classes in 2006, which included basic sewing techniques and clothing construction.

Rebecca Hilterman, a teacher at Knoch Middle School in 2006, said the school had elective sewing classes that taught students how to use a sewing machine and even how to make their own clothing.

“Part of the reason we still teach the sewing course — it’s fun, but it is also an excellent exercise in reading and following directions,” Hilterman said. “Just in case they have to press a shirt for a job interview some day.”
