Butler Memorial, Clarion Hospital president announces retirement
Independence Health System announced two leadership role changes on March 27, led by the upcoming retirement of Karen Allen, president of Butler Memorial and Clarion hospitals.
Allen will be succeeded by Matt Schnur, a Butler native who has been with the health system for the past 14 years.
“As I pass the torch, I am deeply grateful for our exceptional team at Independence Health System and the communities we serve,” Allen said. “Matt is an outstanding leader, and I’m confident he will guide our hospitals to new heights. I wish him all the best in leading us into a successful future.”
Allen joined Butler Memorial Hospital in 2004 when she was hired as director of surgical services. Other roles she filled over the past two decades include assistant vice president of Patient Care Services, vice president of Ancillary and Critical Care Services and chief nursing officer.
She became president of the two sister hospitals in early 2023, following the merger of Butler Health System and Excela Health.
“A trusted and longtime colleague, Karen’s leadership has been defined by her unwavering and extraordinary commitment to our patients, employees and communities,” Ken DeFurio, president and CEO of Independence Health System said. “Her forthright ability to guide with compassion, vision and integrity has left an indelible mark on our organization.”
Schnur began his career in Butler as a staff pharmacist, advancing through clinical pharmacy to director of pharmacy, and most recently serving as vice president of Ancillary Services.
He holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Duquesne University and completed a postgraduate residency at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, Va.
An official retirement date has not been set at this time for Allen, as she will work closely with Schnur over the next couple months to ensure a smooth transition. During that time, Allen and Schnur will serve as co-presidents.
Independence also announced that Michael Sekhon has been promoted to vice president of Ancillary Services for the entire health system.
Sekhon previously worked at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for more than nine years and joined Excela Health seven years ago. His systemwide responsibilities will include pharmacy, laboratory and radiology service lines.
“We are fortunate to have such talented leaders within our organization,” DeFurio said. “Please join me in thanking Karen for her incredible service and dedication, and in congratulating Matt and Mike as they step into their new roles and play key roles in our continued progress.”
