It takes “a mountain” of volunteers to fry enough fish to serve the 1,000-plus customers who attend the fish fry every Friday during Lent at St. Conrad Church — but the church comes through every week.

Debbie Zbuckvich, one of the organizers of the fish fry at the All Saints Parish church, said the team of volunteers starts preparing for the Friday fry every Monday, by taking inventory and ordering product. Throughout the week, they prepare the fish, the batter, the coleslaw and other sides, so on Friday they can keep the takeout line moving into and out of the church.

According to Zbuckvich, the volunteers who bring it all together never waiver in their mission to serve fish to the masses every week.

“I love working with everybody,” Zbuckvich said. “All the volunteers, I couldn't do it without them. It’s heartwarming. It really is.”

Zbuckvich said the church served more than 1,300 people on March 21. Money raised through the fish fries goes back into supplies and stock for the weekly fish fries, and the rest is used for the church’s initiatives, Zbuckvich said.

While some churches and fish fry venues have seating for dine-in patrons, St. Conrad’s is all takeout, because of the number of volunteers it would take to add that option to the weekly feast.

Providing eat-in service is a long-term possibility for the St. Conrad’s fish fry, Zbuckvich said, and she invites people to look into volunteering by going to the church’s website at allsaintsbutler.org.

“People ask why they can’t eat in, that would take 100 more people,” Zbuckvich said. “If anybody ever wants to volunteer, go on our website. I welcome everybody and anybody.”
