Funding education is a must

I would like to respond to the March 19 editorial “Jumping to conclusions as bad as not being informed.”

As a former educator and participant in the peaceful protest regarding abolishing the Department of Education, I was concerned that the man, who appeared to be having a psychotic episode, detracted from the purpose of the rally. Subsequently, mention of him occurred three times in the paper with no mention of how eliminating the Department of Education would affect our youth and public schools.

It is important to be informed and educated in a democracy! Lest you think this department is a waste of taxpayers’ money, here are the facts. This federal agency supplements state and local funding for education in three main areas: Title 1 programs benefit students in the poorest rural, suburban and urban communities. Special education services support individuals with disabilities in education (IDEA). Federal student aid for post-high school education is awarded in the form of Pell Grants, as well as student loan programs with lower interest rates than banks. This department also provides funding for career and technical education to high schools, vocational and community colleges.

Our children are our future and education is the key to a better life! Gutting the Department of Education will only contribute to fewer opportunities for many of our young citizens and the dollars saved by the shortsighted decision will cost taxpayers and undermine our wonderful democracy. Please support public education!
