Moraine State Park has busy spring schedule
Moraine State Park in Muddy Creek Township has a busy lineup of events for visitors to mark the start of spring.
March 28 — Nature lovers are invited to Moraine at 5 p.m. for a 1.5-mile naturalist-led hike of the North Country Trail, which will prominently feature beavers. The hike will start from Pavilion 7 at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore.
March 29 — Moraine State Park is hosting a park cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon, with participants meeting at the 528 Boat Launch. The purpose is to pick up litter and take away the potential of disease-carrying mosquitoes breeding in the park. The event is being organized by the Mercer County Conservation District. Walk-ins are welcome.
April 12 — Moraine State Park is hosting a volunteer kickoff event to introduce interested volunteers to potential opportunities at both Moraine and McConnells Mill. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Pavilion 7 at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore, near the Owlet Gift Shop.
April 15 — Moraine State Park is celebrating Earth Day by hosting a spring cleanup day at 10 a.m. The goal is to weed and mulch the garden in front of the park office. Participants will meet at the park office on the South Shore, and are encouraged to dress appropriately, and bring snacks and a drink. Registration is required.
April 18 — Bird enthusiasts are invited to Moraine State Park for the Woodcock Walk at 7 p.m. The nature walk is centered around the woodcock, which will be going through its spring mating ritual at this time of year. Participants will meet at Pavilion 7 at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore.
April 19 — The state of Pennsylvania has over 300 nesting pairs of bald eagles, and some of them make their home in Moraine State Park. Bird lovers are invited to learn more about the bald eagle starting at 10 a.m. on April 19 at the Davis Hollow Marina, when the park naturalist gives a lesson about bald eagle biology and leads a hike to one of the nesting pairs at the park. Binoculars are recommended.
April 29 — Moraine State Park is looking for volunteers to help get its kayaks and canoes in shape for the summer boating season. Volunteers will meet at 10:30 a.m. in front of the park office on the South Shore for Kayak Cleaning Day. Registration is required, and volunteers are advised to bring snacks and water.
