Frederick Kapp
Frederick A. Kapp, 74, of Butler, passed away Monday, March 24, 2025, in the emergency department of Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1950, in Brookville, Pa., he was a son of the late Ralph A. Kapp and Dorothy Anderson Kapp.
He was a graduate of Clarion High School and Clarion State College.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, for 41 years.
Fred was also a member of the St. Michael Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. It’s interesting to note that he was only a patient shopping companion when he knew he was doing it for charity!
He was an enthusiastic gardener of vegetables and flowers, and his berry bushes flourished under his meticulous care. Rhubarb and strawberries from his garden made a great pie, his favorite.
Fred enjoyed reading historical and mystery novels and solving — in ink — Sudoku and crossword puzzles. Cards and trivia games always caught his attention, especially if he was winning. He also loved watching classic movies with his family.
In his earlier days, he enjoyed backpacking, bicycling, hiking, tubing and cross-country skiing, and he had a special spot for kayaking at Moraine State Park. Later on, the Kapp family camped at many favorite locations, including Cook Forest State Park, and campgrounds in Erie and Gettysburg, as well as Sea Isle City, N.J., and Niagara Falls, Canada.
He was a dedicated coach of his sons’ teams in basketball, baseball, and indoor and outdoor soccer. He was a recreation-age group director while coaching rec and traveling soccer teams, and he served for many years as director of fields & grounds for the Butler County Soccer Association.
Above all, Fred loved to laugh and joke around.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Joanne Kapp, whom he married Dec. 27, 1980; and his son, Ethan Kapp, who cherishes his memory.
He also is survived by his sister, Margaret Johnson and her husband, John; his in-laws, Carol and Jack Carlin, Robert Rotthoff, Barbara and Frank Mulich, Donald Rotthoff, Gregg and Sharon Rotthoff, and Ann Kapp; five nephews, Jim Hester, Frank Mulich, Mike Mulich, Owen Rotthoff and Kevan Rotthoff; and four nieces, Sara Brick, Kelly Scherr, Michelle Carlin and Olivia Rotthoff.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Kapp, who tragically died in a vehicle accident in 2008. Fred also was predeceased by his older brother, Roger Kapp, in 2016.
Fred was an organ donor. The Kapp family asks that you please consider also becoming an organ donor.
