High school roundup: Olivares, Crouch lead Butler softball to 1st win; WPIAL section tennis brackets released

Butler rallied with three runs in the fourth inning to beat Mt. Lebanon 6-4 Tuesday for its first win of the season.

Shortstop Kyra Olivares, who pitched three innings and allowed two unearned runs, ripped two triples and finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs for the Golden Tornado (1-6, 1-2 section). Mikayla Crouch pitched four innings in relief to get the win, scattering six hits and two runs (one earned) for the win. She also went 2-for-3 on offense with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases.

Aryanna Golob (1-for-3) and Sylee Karenbauer (1-for-3) each scored, and Lily Vicari (2-for-4) drove in one run.

Knoch 11, Freeport 0 — Kaila Purcell struck out six and allowed two hits in five innings, and also had two hits at the plate, to lead the Knights to a win.

Emersyn Jones hit her fourth home run in the victory, finishing with two hits. Alena Tekely had three hits.

Postponed — North Catholic’s road game at Ambridge was postponed to an as-yet-determined date due to poor field conditions.

Baseball

Seneca Valley 8, Central Catholic 4 — The Raiders (3-3, 1-1 section) scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Malichky pitched five innings for the win, Cahall recorded the two-inning save.

Greensburg Salem 8, Knoch 2 — The Knights fell to 4-4 (1-1 section). No other information was provided.

Freeport 6, Ligonier Valley 0 — The Yellowjackets improved to 2-3 (1-2 section) with their second shutout win. No other information was provided.

New Castle 3, Mars 2 — The Planets fell to 2-3 (1-3 section) No other information was provided.

North Catholic 11, Obama Academy 1 — The Trojans improved to 3-1. No other information was provided.

Girls lacrosse

Sophomore Macey Edwards scored three goals to lead Freeport to a narrow 6-5 win over Knoch.

Ava Dreher scored twice and had an assist, and Sofia Glass had a goal. The Yellowjackets also got 14 saves from goalie Abigail Legin.

Boys volleyball

Butler needed extra points twice to pick up a key 3-1 win over Pine-Richland on Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-16, 24-26, 29-27, 25-23 as the Goldent Tornado improved to 4-2 this season (1-1 section).

Mason Anderson and Andrew Slaugenhaup tied with a team-hig h13 kills, while Slaugenhaup added three blocks.

Maddox McCall had a team-high 18 digs, and Alec Teff and Alfons Semmler each had three aces.

Boys tennis

North Catholic junior Justin Garvey is the No. 1 overall seed in the WPIAL Class 2A Section 3 Singles Tournament and has a first-round bye, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Sewickley Academy. The Section 3 bracket was announced Tuesday.

Knoch’s Mason Hoffman is the 9-seed, and will face Garvey if he beats West Allegheny’s Neal Oswald in the first round.

North Catholic’s Alex Weber is No. 3 and will face No. 14 Matthew Lawrence (Springdale). Knoch’s Ethan Lauer, No. 10, takes on West Allegheney’s Donovan Kumpfmiller, No. 7.

The top four reach the WPIAL championships later this month.

North Hills 3, Seneca Valley 2 — Gianna Varlotta won his Singles 2 matchup 6-2, 6-0, and the Doubles 1 pair of Paul Weis and Eric Chen won a three-setter 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 for the Raiders’ two wins.

SV is 2-5 this season.

Track and field

Slippery Rock was swept by Hickory on the track, the boys losing 101.5-39.5 and the girls 84.5-65.5.

The boys got wins from Hunter Doerflinger in the 800-meter (2:11.50) and Max Kovacik in the 200 (23.70). The duo led the 4x400 to a win in 3:49.

Aiva Reich won both girls hurdles, crossing the finish line in the 100 in 16.8 and the 300 in 49.9. Kasey Yeager won the 800 in 2:35.7, and Samantha Montgomery won the triple jump in 33-11.

Mars boys 115, Armstrong 34; Armstrong girls 88, Mars 61 — No additional information was provided.
