On April 7, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is closing Delwood Road in Butler Township and beginning nighttime lane restrictions on Route 68/East Jefferson Street as construction begins on the Karns Crossing Bridge in the City of Butler and Summit and Butler townships.

Delwood Road will be closed through the beginning of November for construction of a temporary road. To access Delwood Road from the west, motorists will take Route 8 north and turn right onto East Brady Street, travel about 1.25 miles and turn right onto Delwood Road.

Single lane traffic restrictions with flaggers on Route 68/East Jefferson Street will be in place starting the evening of April 7 to replace the bridge. Work to install a temporary traffic barrier and water, gas and sewer line repairs/replacements will last throughout the summer. Intermittent single lane closures from Eau Claire Street in Butler Township to the intersection of Oneida Valley Road will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Swank Construction Company, of New Kensington, is the contractor for the $64.8 million bridge replacement project. Work is estimated to be completed in spring 2028.

The project includes replacing the bridge that carries Route 68 over railroad lines and the adjacent arch culvert over the waterway. Traffic safety and capacity improvements at the Route 68/Delwood Road intersection and the Route 68/Route 422 eastbound on-ramp intersection are included in the project.
