Let’s all ride safer this spring

As the weather warms and the sun finally begins to shine on Butler County, it’s only natural for bikers who have been waiting all winter to start to itch to get out on the roads and enjoy the ride.

But these early spring days have been hard on our motorcycling community.

Two serious accidents just days apart in the same general area of Summit Township led to one driver being taken by LifeFlight to a Pittsburgh-area trauma center Thursday, March 27, and, tragically, a second driver died Saturday, March 29.

As the weather continues to improve, we hope motorcycle enthusiasts will drive safely and we hope four-wheeled drivers will be more aware of our friends and family on two wheels.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers some safety tips to get us all home after our rides.

“Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles. Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle,” states the foundation’s website, msf-usa.org. “Avoid riding in the blind spots of cars and trucks. If possible, flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. Have an escape route in case a motorist doesn’t see you and violates your right-of-way.”

The foundation also recommends wearing a quality helmet — full-face helmets provide the best protection — and eye protection, in addition to wearing leathers.

“Dress for a crash as well as for the ride,” the foundation states.

PennDOT advises drivers of cars and other vehicles to be aware that motorcycles are small and may be difficult to see. Check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes and at intersections. Large vehicles can also block a motorcycle from a motorist’s view and a motorcycle can suddenly appear out of nowhere.

PennDOT also advises drivers to leave at least four seconds when following a motorcycle and to be sure to signal before changing lanes or merging with traffic.

PennDOT reminds us that motorcycles have the same rights and privileges as any vehicle on the road. Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width as the motorcyclist needs the room to maneuver safely in all types of road conditions.

Let’s share the roads and let’s all get home safely to our loved ones every time.
