High school roundup: North Catholic’s Justin Garvey grabs WPIAL boys tennis championships 2nd seed

The WPIAL announced its boys tennis singles tournament championship brackets Friday morning, with two North Catholic players set to compete in Class 2A.

Junior Justin Garvey earned the No. 2 seed after winning Section 3 this week; he will face Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris (No. 15) in the first round. Garvey’s classmate, Alex Weber, is the eighth seed and will face Indiana senior Gabe Nettleton (No. 9) in the first round.

The top three placers at the WPIAL championships make the PIAA Boys Tennis Singles Championships later this season. No Butler County athletes qualified for WPIALs in 3A.

The WPIAL 2A championships will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at Bethel Park High School. The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals will start at 11 a.m. Tuesday, and the championship and third-place match will be contested 1 p.m. Wednesday.

In the 3A sectional brackets, Mars’ Andrew Bocci, Mars’ Ethan Palmer and Mars’ Cal Johnson made the Section 2 quarterfinals this week at North Allegheny High School before being knocked out.

In 2A sectionals, Garvey cruised into the final, where he beat Quaker Valley sophomore Will Meagher in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Weber lost to Meagher in the semis but beat QV’s Tanner Schultz in the third-place match 6-2, 6-0. Knoch’s Mason Hoffman made the quarterfinals, losing to Garvey.

Softball

Natalia Rushak homered, drove in four runs and scored twice, and Kennedy Brown tossed a no-hitter to lead North Catholic to an 11-0, six-inning win over Western Beaver.

Brown struck out 15 and walked three. The Trojanettes broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth. Rushak (3-for-4) also doubled. Sam Foley (2-for-4) doubled twice, had two RBIs and scored.

Karns City 4, Mercer 3 — Addison Burrows scored the game-winning run, diving to home plate to beat a tag after a slow-roller to the pitcher in the bottom of the seventh after Mercer tied the game in the top half.

Burrows (3-for-3) drove in a run, scored twice and stole three bases. She also threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight. Catcher Jessica Rodgers went 0-for-2 but knocked in two keys runs, and Nicole Huff (1-for-2) also had an RBI.

Canon-McMillan 12, Butler 1 — Lily Vicari hit a solo home run in the Golden Tornado’s section loss. Marissa Sklencar recorded a double, one of just three Butler hits in the game.

Seneca Valley 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Lauren Folino went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, and Bella Gross was 2-for-3 with a two-bagger in the Raiders’ win.

Abby Kalkowski got the win with seven Ks in four innings. Lexie Hames fanned eight in three innings of relief.

Highlands 5, Freeport 2 — Kelly Schmidt, Arianna Devlin and Taelyn Toy all singled for the Yellowjackets in the loss.

North Hills 9, Mars 4 — No other stats were provided.

Baseball

Catcher Kason Barker went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to power Freeport to a 7-1 win over Karns City.

Chase Walker (1-for-4) knocked in two runs, and Michael Hanz (1-for-2) and Gavin Tola (1-for-3) scored twice in the Yellowjackets’ win. Owen Westendorf struck out six and scattered four hits while pitching into the seventh for the win.

Adam Manuel and Jacob Jones combined for 16 strikeouts for the Gremlins. Brock Dittman was 2-for-3 with a run.

Boys tennis

Seneca Valley lost to Shaler 3-2, with its doubles pairs picking up three-set victories. Eric Chen and Kylan Meiers won Doubles 1 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and the Doubles 2 pair of Liam Schley and Mason Klingensmith won 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Boys lacrosse

North Canton Hoover popped Butler, which was depleted on offense down a couple starters, 15-1. Deacon Smiko scored the lone goal, and Max Weiland stopped 66% of shots he faced.

Mars 12, Hampton 5 — No other stats were provided.

Girls lacrosse

Mars beat North Catholic 17-1 in WPIAL section play. No other stats were provided.
