Lonnie Hoover

Hoover

Lonnie Gene Hoover, 75, formerly of Portersville, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Fla., after he lost his fierce battle with leukemia.

Born on June 5, 1949, in Hilliards, he was the son of the late Albert Sherman Hoover and Catherine Elizabeth Hillard Hoover.

After graduating from Warren Area High School in 1967, Lonnie served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy on the USS Truckee from June 1967 to June 1971, followed by service in the Army Reserve until June 1973. His commitment to service was a significant chapter in his life, reflecting his dedication and patriotism. He was a member of the Harmony Masonic Lodge 429 and the Laborers’ Union of Western Pennsylvania.

Lonnie’s passions included hunting, fishing, cooking and spending time with his beloved dogs. He was an avid enthusiast of wildlife and the ocean, often found listening to music or enjoying his favorite Westerns and Fox News. His love for these activities was only surpassed by the joy he found in being with his family.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Joy (Adam) Schawalder of Cape Coral, Fla., and Matthew (Christine) Hoover of Beaver Falls; and his six grandchildren, Hunter Schawalder of Cape Coral, Fla., Connor (Brianna) Schawalder of Fort Stewart, Ga., Payne Hoover of West Virginia University-Morgantown, W.Va., and Camden Hoover, Saeryn Hoover and Adalyn Hoover of Beaver Falls.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martina Hoover, in 2024, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1970, and who he missed immensely.

Lonnie’s life was marked by his kind, warm spirit and the profound connections he made with those around him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.

A private celebration of life at sea will honor Lonnie Hoover and Martina Hoover at a future date.
