Elton John can’t read, watch his sons play sports amid ‘distressing’ vision loss

Elton John is opening up on his “distressing” vision loss, saying a recent eye infection has cost him the ability to read and watch his sons play sports.

“I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” the 78-year-old “Rocket Man” told the Times of London in an interview published Friday. “I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”

The five-time Grammy winner revealed in September that he’d spent the summer “dealing with a severe eye infection” that he’d contracted in France. As a result, John said at the time that he only had “limited vision in one eye.”

By December, the EGOT winner said he’d “lost” his eyesight, leaving him unable to view the musical adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada,” for which he’d written the score.

“It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” John told the crowd at the London premiere.

But despite calling the situation “distressing” and “emotional,” John says he knows he’s still “lucky to have the life” he has.

“I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here,” he told the Times, while pointing to his left eye. “My career has been wonderful but the kids are what matters.”

John has been legally married to filmmaker David Furnish since 2014, though the couple have been together since 1993. They share two sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, which they welcomed via surrogate.
