High school roundup: Knoch softball outlasts North Catholic; Moniteau’s Grossman breaks pole vault record

It took nine innings, but Knoch came away with a 15-14 non-conference softball win over North Catholic on Monday.

Marlee Fraser, Emersyn Jones, Alena Tekely, McKenna Brailey and Brooke Bastin had multi-hit games for the Knights (6-1), who overcame an 8-1 fourth-inning deficit.

Nicole Paschel fell a double short of hitting for the cycle for the Trojanettes (5-2), including a grand slam and six RBIs. Kennedy Brown had a game-best four base knocks, while Clare Kotwica and Alanna McEnaney each had three. Kotwica bashed a home run.

New Castle 19, Mars 4 — The Planets fell to 2-8 with this loss. No other details were available.

Track and field

Moniteau’s Ashton Grossman reached 14 feet, 3 inches to break the school record in the pole vault, helping the Warriors top Cranberry 82-68.

The previous school record was 14-2, achieved by Kyle Norling in 2019.

Isaiah Thompson won three individual events for the Warriors (100, 200, long jump). Trent Beachem placed first in both hurdle events.

Girls lacrosse

Ava Dreher and Sophia Glass both scored five times to lead Freeport to a 16-4 defeat of Winchester Thurston.

Macey Edwards added four goals, and Abigail Legin registered nine saves for the Yellowjackets.

Baseball

Slippery Rock trailed by three runs entering the top of the seventh inning against Grove City, then Doug Popovec hit a two-out, two-run, tying double for the Rockets (3-0). Isaac McCandless notched a go-ahead RBI single in the next frame, helping Slippery Rock to a 10-8 win.

North Allegheny 3, Butler 1 — Nolan Stefaniak struck out eight in six innings on the mound for the Golden Tornado (6-1, 3-1 in section), who dropped their first outing of the season.

Mars 7, Freeport 2 — The Planets (3-4) snapped a two-game losing skid with this win against the Yellowjackets (3-4).

Knoch 5, Highlands 2 — Sean Morgan singled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Knights.

Zane Pacek worked a complete game in the victory, striking out 10 and walking one. He allowed the two runs (one earned) on five hits.

The Knights improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in section play.

Boys tennis

Seneca Valley dropped a 5-0 decision to Sewickley Academy, falling to 2-7 on the season.

The WPIAL singles championships were postponed a day due to pending inclement weather, the district announced Monday. The first round through semifinals will now be held Wednesday, with the finals remaining Thursday.

Boys volleyball

Seneca Valley beat North Allegheny 3-2. No other stats were provided.
