Man killed by state police in Beaver County after stealing Ohio police cruiser

A man was shot and killed by Pennsylvania state police in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, after assaulting and stealing the cruiser of an Ohio state police officer Friday, April 4.

Pennsylvania state police said they were notified of the situation around 6 p.m. They encountered the vehicle heading eastbound on Interstate 76 near the Ohio border and began a pursuit.

The pursuit continued for several miles into Pennsylvania, prompting the closure of I-76 East from a New Castle exit at mile marker 10 through a Cranberry exit at mile marker 28.

State police said they used “legal intervention to stop the pursuit.”

Troopers approached the vehicle before an altercation ensued, leading to the use of deadly force, state police said. The suspect was killed at the scene.

According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, I-76 was reopened early Saturday morning.

Pennsylvania state police Troop D is investigating the incident further. There is no threat to the public at this time, they said.
