Police identify man killed following chase involving police cruiser

The name of the man who was shot and killed by state police in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, was released on Wednesday, April 9.

Deshawn D. Leeth, 30, of Michigan, was shot and killed on Friday, April 4, after police said he assaulted an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer and stole his police cruiser.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, around 5:30 p.m. Friday, troopers from the Hiram post were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover crash eastbound on the Ohio Turnpike near the state line.

Shortly after, a trooper made contact with a man walking the shoulder of the highway. The man immediately assaulted the trooper, who then unsuccessfully attempted to use a stun gun on him, police said. The man is then accused of stealing a marked highway patrol Dodge Charger and fleeing east onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Pennsylvania police were notified shortly after 6 p.m. that a stolen vehicle was headed eastbound on Interstate 76. Police encountered the vehicle near the Ohio border and began a pursuit, prompting the closure of I-76 East from a New Castle exit at mile marker 10 through a Cranberry Township exit at mile marker 28.

State police said they used “legal intervention to stop the pursuit.”

Troopers approached the vehicle and an altercation ensued, leading to the use of deadly force, state police said. Leeth was killed at the scene.

According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, I-76 was reopened early Saturday morning.

State police Troop D is investigating the incident. At the conclusion, the investigation will be reviewed by the Beaver County district attorney.
