Real ID requirements kick in next month, get yours soon
Real IDs have been around for a while and, while we all knew they were going to be required for some things eventually, that time will finally get here early next month.
Starting May 7, Americans won’t be able to fly domestically without a Real ID. International flights will still require passports, and passports also will permit a person to fly domestically, but those without a passport will need a Real ID to fly anywhere domestically. Real IDs also will be required to enter certain federal facilities.
Butler PennDOT Driver License Center, normally closed on Mondays, will be open for three Mondays leading up to May 7, to help residents get their Real ID by adding extra days to get them.
Real ID remains optional, but in cases where it is required, another federally approved ID, like a passport or military ID, will be required.
The Real ID act was introduced 20 years ago and some have been reluctant to adopt the change. Real IDs are not required to drive, to vote, to access hospitals, to visit the post office, access federal courts, or to apply for or receive federal benefits.
Those who don’t fly frequently, or at all, may not see the point. But, at a time in our country when identity seems to be questioned more and more, having a Real ID might provide a feeling of security for some of us.
There are 50 PennDOT centers, in addition to Butler’s, that will be open the three extra Mondays leading up to next month’s deadline for those who’d like to get one. Real IDs will still be available after May 7, that’s just the date the requirements kick in.
A Real ID will largely resemble a driver’s license with a white star in a gold circle on the top right corner.
To get a Real ID, you will need one document proving your identity and lawful status, one document proving your Social Security number and two documents proving your Pennsylvania residency. Find more information at www.pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/real-id.
Take advantage of the additional hours PennDOT is offering to us to get this out of the way now, before you really need it in a pinch.
