High school roundup: Butler’s Amelia McMichael, Mars players propel West to Cager Classic wins
Butler senior and future West Chester forward Amelia McMichael scored eight points in the Cager Classic, an all-star game of senior basketball players, last weekend as the West team beat the East team 66-60.
Mars’ Carmella McDole led the Butler County representatives with 10 points.
The West boys team lost 117-109, but not before Mars’ Drew Navetta made a game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime. He led the team with 25 points and was named the West’s MVP. Mars’ Austin Campbell scored 18 points.
Slippery Rock’s girls swept Sharon 110-35 and Sharpsville 114-31 in a tri-meet, while the boys split their portion, beating Sharpsville 84-49 and losing to Sharon 76-64.
For the girls, multi-event winners included: Aiva Reich in the 100-meter hurdles (16.5 seconds), 300 hurdles (52.4) and 4x100 relay (53.50); Kasey Yeager in the 1600 (5:51), 800 (2:34) and 4x800 (11:40); Madison Gearhart in the 100 (13.4), 200 (29.2) and 4x100; and Samantha Montgomery in the long jump (15 feet, 3 inches), triple jump (33-0.5) and 4x100.
On the boys’ side, multi-event winners included: Hunter Doerflinger in the 1600 (4:53), 800 (12:58) and 4x800 (11:08); and Dustin Joyce in the long jump (20-11) and triple jump (41-4).
Nolan Cranmer, Deacon Simko and Brock Collins scored two goals apiece in Butler’s 8-3 win over Hempfield Area.
With Max Weiland stopping nearly 75% of the shots he faced, the Tornado shut out the Spartans in the second half.
Jenna Kanya scored two goals and Macey Edwards added one in Freeport’s 18-3 loss to South Fayette. Abigail Legin recorded 17 saves.
North Catholic 3, Mars 0 — The Trojans swept the Planets by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-15. No other details were available.
Seneca Valley 3, Moon 0 — The Raiders won this Section 3-3A contest on the road.
