Jade’s Dog Park to close for 6 weeks
Butler’s dog owners will need to look for a new place to play fetch for six weeks this spring as Jade’s Dog Park in Alameda Park will be closed for repairs and improvements.
The request to close was approved by the Butler County commissioners on Wednesday, April 9. The park in Butler Township will close its gates starting April 21 and will remain closed until May 30.
Lance Welliver, director of Butler County Parks and Recreation, said the reason for the closure was to make improvements and repairs to fencing, lawn areas and other areas based on the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
“This is the second year we’ve remained open over the winter months. There’s been some damage to the gate areas, especially on the small dog side,” Welliver said.
He clarified that he does not believe the damage to be a product of vandalism, rather just normal wear and tear from operating through the winter.
The repairs and improvements are expected to take six weeks, especially due to lawn care.
“If we’re able to open it earlier, we will. It just depends on how fast the repairs go,” Welliver said. “We try to give the grass time to grow and time to take hold.”
The cost to the county is yet to be determined, as the advisory board is waiting for a quote on the gates.
The commissioners also approved an agreement with Pyrotechnico Fireworks for a firework display for the Community Day event on July 2, weather permitting. The cost of the display is $15,550, but is fully covered by Butler Township.
Commissioner Kevin Boozel asked Welliver what happens if the weather does not cooperate on the date. Welliver said the fireworks would be postponed.
“I will say, the second year of this, it was incredibly well-attended and there wasn’t a single person who walked away that didn’t say that it was a great fireworks display and a wonderful evening,” Commissioner Leslie Osche said. “Everybody really enjoyed it. I have nothing but positive feedback.”
The next commissioners meeting is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23.
