High school sports roundup: Mars bats too much for Highlands
Danny Murray collected three hits, including a double, scored one run and drove in another as Mars earned an 8-0 baseball victory over Highlands on Friday.
Finn Seideneck had two of Mars’ 11 hits, scored once and drove in two for the Planets (4-4), who used six pitchers to shut out the Golden Rams.
Hampton 5, Knoch 2 — Hampton’s Jake Adamczyk and Brady Smith limited Knoch to one earned run on six hits in a 5-2 victory over the Knights.
Kyle Morgan had two hits and scored a run for Knoch (6-6).
North Allegheny 7, Butler 4 — The Golden Tornado fell behind 6-0 before a late rally fizzled.
It was Butler’s third loss to the Tigers in five days.
Preston Richter had two hits for the Tornado and Boden Lenyk tripled and scored twice.
Kennedy Brown struck out 16 in a 5-0 victory over Central Valley.
Natalia Rushak and Juliana Lehman both doubled for the Trojanettes (6-3, 3-2).
Knoch 16, Indiana 1 — Freshman Emersyn Jones went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs as the Knights (3-0, 7-1) romped in WPIAL Section 1-4A play Thursday. McKenna Brailey was also 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Kaila Purcell added three hits and three RBIs herself.
Carissa Tekely had her first homer in the victory.
Derry 10, Freeport 0 — Addi Gourley and Ali Smith both singled for the Yellowjackets (3-6, 0-4).
Fox Chapel 6, Mars 1 — Sophia Soltis doubled twice for the Planets (2-9, 1-4).
North Catholic’s Justin Garvey fell short of a WPIAL Class 2A singles title, losing to Belle Vernon’s Max Henson 6-1, 6-1 at Bethel Park High School. Garvey still qualifies for the PIAA tournament, along with Henson and Montour’s John Rohrkaste.
Seneca Valley 5, Canon-McMillan 0 — Marco Lopez, Gianni Varlotta and Billy Conway each won in singles play for the Raiders.
Paul Weis-Eric Chen and Kylan Meiers-Liam Schley won in doubles action.
North Catholic’s girls earned a pair of wins against Deer Lakes (89-52) and Springdale (108-19).
On the boys side, North defeated Springdale 93-42, but lost on a tiebreaker to Deer Lakes following a 70-70 score.
