Lawsuit aims to remove LGBTQ protections

On March 6, Knoch School District, state Rep. Aaron Bernstine and others filed a lawsuit against Gov. Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.

The commission enforces state laws that prohibit discrimination. In this case, plaintiffs argue it has expanded the definition of sex to include gender. The plaintiffs, represented by the Thomas More Society, say that it is unconstitutional for the commission to expand the definition of sex without legislative approval.

If this lawsuit is successful, fewer children will be protected.

What kind of school district advocates for the removing protections rather than expanding them?

The society’s involvement makes it abundantly clear this lawsuit is hiding behind the myth of “unconstitutionality.” It is an attempt to stifle those who don’t fit the “Christian mold.” The society has a history of fighting gay and transgender rights.

It seems clear Knoch, and others, are terrified by that scary word “gender” and are attempting to eliminate LGBTQ protections.

Let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that this lawsuit is only aimed at trans children. The impact of this suit will extend to other areas that the agency covers, including discrimination in employment and housing.

To add insult to injury, the school board has agreed to use $10,000 of taxpayer money to fund this discriminatory effort. Every child deserves kindness, respect and protection. It matters not if that child fits into a category that scares you.
